A Memory of a Drum

2019

When growing up, I often had a hard time falling asleep. I couldn´t silence the stressful thoughts spinningaround in my head, amplified by the silence of the night. Some nights, my father would sit in his armchair, drumming on his handmade drum. Rhythmic. Monotonous. A deep pulsation. The sound found its way into my bedroom, becoming an anchor point for my thoughts, separating them, and the stress, from my body.

I had not thought of this for years, but this summer the drum re-entered the stage. Sitting by the fire one night, I once more heard the drum from my childhood. Happiness. A feeling of being at exactly the right place at exactly the right time hit me. A peace of mind. Feeling connected.

In INVOKING I investigate how I, through repetitive acts and line drawing, can materialize the non-physical and create a sphere for contemplation. I strive to capture the immaterial in materializations which can open up for the nonverbal and a presence of magic.
